  Generally known as John rather than David Name change Jacobs - Cooper In 1936 David John Jacobs changed the family name to Cooper. This effectively changed his surname plus that of his 2 children at the same time. Cooper was his mother's original maiden name [see Catherine Cooper for more details] Two years later, both David John's brothers (Charles Henry and Sydney James Patrick) changed their surname to Cooper as well.
